Buyer's Guide
Know what you're buying.
Every car does the same thing - drive you where you need to be.
Every solar panel does the same thing - convert sunlight into DC power.
Shopping for solar modules is like shopping for a car.
Not all cars are equal when compared to each other.
When shopping for vehicles everyone knows that there is a myriad of things that ultimately defines what kind of car you want/need.
Some leading examples could be related to;
-
Fuel Mileage
-
Budget limitations
-
Known reliability
-
Warranty packages
Just like the comparison of each car - Every type of solar panel will offer certain advantages over each other.
To keep this simple and informative, I will stick to the details that matter the most.
When buying a solar system you want to buy the newest tech to “future-proof” your investment. Think of this as buying the new iPhone 12 vs an old iPhone 5s. It just doesnt cut the cake like the new ones do.
-
Higher efficiency per square foot (up to 12% more!)
-
Highly resistant to Light Induced Degradation ie: sunlight breaking down your solar panel (your investment!)
-
Less temperature sensitivity (more power at high temps)
-
Better low light performance due to increased sensitivity to long-wavelength light
-
Higher Bifacial factor compared to P-type (80% vs 70%)
-
Appearance. Although a small detail for some, TOPCon cells have a true black color instead of a deep blue (which is advertised as black!) Make your system stand out!
n-type?
P-TYPE or
N-type "TOPCon" Cell:
doped with phosphorus - 1 more electron than silicon = cell is negatively charged (= ‘N’ in N-type).
Easy way to remember: N for NEW!
P-type "PERC" Cell:
doped with boron - 1 less electron than silicon = cell is positively charged (= ‘P’ in P-type).
N-Type "TOPCon" Cell Advantages:

Here's five things you need to pay attention to when comparing quotes or shopping for modules.
